A Little Biography:

Biography:
His mother died when he was young and, according to some, his stepmother was not very kind to him so he left home at 17. He worked in a saw mill as a mechanic and metal man. After he married Clara Edith Wilson he worked as an auto mechanic. In 1923, there being little work in Arkansas, he decided to go to California. While his trip West was not even close to being equal to the pioneers in wagons, the trip was interesting. According to letters sent home the record of his trip was as follows:
In early May of 1923 he left Little Rock, Arkansas to go to California, traveling by Model T Ford with a friend Herman and a Brother-In-Law, Jeff Wilson. They traveled south through Hot Springs, Texarkana, across to Witchita Falls, Texas, then on to Amarillo, Texas. They believed that it would be very difficult to find work in the deserts of New Mexico, Arizona and California so they decided to go by way of Denver, Colorado and Wyoming. The arrived in Denver on the 26th of May, 1923. At this point they still intended to go to California. After working a few days to get funds to continue they went north through Wyoming, but now on the way to Seattle, Washington. Working as they went, they passed through Riverton, Wyoming. From here it took them 10 days to get to Pocatello, Idaho, driving through snow storms most of the way. He describes over two and a half feet of snow in the passes. Going across Idaho they arrived in Union, Oregon on the 29th of June. Working on farms through early July they arrived in Pendleton, Oregon about the 9th of July. Working there for about two weeks then on to Portland, Oregon where he found work as an auto mechanic. Since the work was steady, he decided to stay and make a home in Portland. He sent for his wife, Clara and the first two children, Elton and Ord, to come out to Portland. They arrived in 1926.
The family, now with the addition of Joseph and William, moved to San Francisco, CA in 1939 when he accepted a job at Soule Steel Co. as a machinist. Then in April 1942, the day that Dolittle bombed Tokyo, the family moved to Los Angeles where he took a job as a machinist at Lockheed Aircraft. Retiring after the war, he and his wife managed a rooming house until his death.
