Her mother died with the birth of her second child and her father died when she was seven years old. She then was raised by her grandfather Isaac Henderson in Covington, Georgia.

The town of Eldorendo, GA, was named after her. It was an unincorporated town in 1994.

When the new railroad came through the S. Morgan Brown plantation the they decided to establish a post office their and Eldorendo decided to apply for the position of postmistress there. After taking the required government tests she signed the papers "Eldorendo Virginia Brown". The notice of her appointment came along with a statement that the postal officials discovered the town had no name and they had selected the name "Eldorendo" from the first given name on her test papers.
