About his Name:
There is dispute among family members as to his given first name. His daughter, Ona Pridgen in notes and letters thought it was "Shildred". She claimed that he did not like it so he changed it to Samuel. Some say it was Samuel from the beginning. But, there are three instances where he signed or represented his first name as "Shadrick". 1: A deed made in 1851 which refers to him four times as "Shadrick". A deed is also signed as "Shadrick" (Copy held by Joseph Brown ). 2. The Census of 1870 for Miller County, Georgia lists him as "Shadrick". Copy held by Joseph Brown. Joseph Brown so far has found at no time did he refer to himself as "Samuel", only other persons have. He preferred to be called Morgan and that is the name most called him by.
