"History of Iroquois County"
L. N. Pittwood, physician, Watseka, is one of the pioneer physicians of
Iroquois county. He was born in London, England, March 20, 1830 (? sic). His
parents are William and Susanna (Saunders) Pittwood, both natives of England.
His father was a brewer in England. In 1838 (Sic) (May 1836) Dr Pittwood, with
his parents, emigrated to America, and landed in New York City. They remained
in New York State for about 2 and one half years when, in 1841, they came west
to Illinois and stopped in Chicago for about two weeks. From there they went
to St. Charles, Kane Co. Here, Dr. Pittwood received his education, and at nineteen
years of age he began his study of medicine under Dr. George W. Richards, one
of the leading physicians of St. Charles. In 1856 Dr Pittwood commenced the study
of medicine. In 1857 he came to Iroquois County and located in Gilman, where
he began the practice of medicine, and remained in Gilman until 1859, when he
came to Middleport, then the county seat of Iroquois county. From there he came
to Watseka, which has been his home ever since. He is now the oldest practicing
physician of Watseka, and perhaps of Iroquois county. Dr. Pittwood is a member
of the Illinois Medical Society and the Iroquois Medical Association, of which
the latter he is the Vice President. The Doctor has held several offices of public
trust, that of school-director (1876) and alderman of Watseka. In 1865 he was
Senior Warden of Lodge 446 of the Masons. In October he was Warden master of
this lodge. In 1867 Watseka Chapter 114 was chartered with L. N. Pittwood as
E.K. He has been married twice. His first wife was Miss Maria Hookway, of New
York, now deceased; his present wife is Rachel A Foreman, of Michigan. He is
the father of four children: three by his first wife and one by his second.
